Fairfax-San Anselmo Children's Center Summer Camp

The Fairfax-San Anselmo Children's Center (FSACC) is located in Fairfax, California, nestled behind the town and at the foot of Mount Tamalpias. FSACC benefits the community through providing quality child care within the context of the family as a whole. What this means is that the child care provided is only one of several services provided to help the family achieve its goals of economic self-sufficiency. Families recognize the support and services they receive at FSACC as a critical part of their families’ ability to thrive and be successful.

Research shows that children from low-income families often begin school with the disadvantage of not being at the same academic level as their fellow peers, thus the achievement gap is established. Throughout their school career, the achievement gap will grow unless there are supports put into place to help these children and families. Closing the achievement gap is focused on equalizing opportunities among people coming from different socio- economic and/or racial backgrounds. Most experts feel that the “achievement gap” is actually related more to “opportunity gaps” in the resources available to low-income children versus higher-income children. FSACC's goal is to address the achievement gap by offering many meaningful learning opportunities to the children.

The School Age Programs' central summer project helps FSACC's children to experience California History through hands-on activities. Their summer program is an exhilarating 10 weeks filled with activities that focus on helping children to maintain academic skills through participating in play based, fun summer-time activities. These activities provide knowledge and experience with a variety of topics and themes. Each week, activities were planned to support the area of study.
