Reaching Guatemala's Girls Via Radio

When lockdowns sent 1.5 billion children home from school, many of our grantee partners had to halt their activities. But their dedication to their work pushed them to find creative solutions to continue providing education to the children they serve. Our partners at Girl Rising Guatemala have taken to the airwaves to reach youth in their communities:

“We recorded the first six programs for our radio show, Cambiando Mi Mundo, and three radio spots to promote the program in three different languages. These are going to air on the two radio stations that cover four of the five regions where we work. As they are geared toward youth in our programs, the first shows include a review of the first two stories/materials studied before the pandemic with later shows presenting the four remaining stories in the curriculum.

“The radio show launched on September 5, and the first two programs aired on two radio stations and Facebook live. So far, we have reached approximately 817 people through our Facebook page alone.

“Some of the communities don’t have access to the Internet or a stable radio signal so we are working on how to reach participants in these areas. One possibility is using megaphones to replay the radio show, while also respecting physical distancing norms.”
